THE PALANíR INCIDENT

After picking up the Palantír mistakenly, after Grima Wormtongue threw it out of Orthanc, Pippin is mysteriously drawn to it. Later that night, the Young Hobbit steals it away from Gandalf, and looks into it. There he faces Sauron. The rest of the sleeping camp is awakened by Pippin's screaming. Gandalf questons Pippin as to what he told Sauron. Pippin answers that Sauron asked who he was, and Pippin replied with the simple answer of, "I'm a Hobbit." Sauron now knows what Hobbits are, and the quest is in danger. Gandalf takes Pippin away to Minas Tirith, to "keep him out of mischief."
